Shockwave Therapy

What is Shockwave therapy?
Shockwave therapy is a non-invasive, non-surgical therapeutic procedure that uses acoustic energy to promote tissue healing and blood flow to areas of chronic injury and pain.  This treatment is especially beneficial for chronic tendinopathies, adhesive capsulitis, plantar fasciitis, tennis elbow, sports injuries and more.

How long do treatments last?
Most treatments last 5-10 minutes.

How many treatments will I need?
Everyone is different.  Most patients benefit from 3-8 treatments, once or twice weekly.  Maximum benefit is seen after 8-12 weeks of treatment, although some clients report improvement after just one or two treatments.

What does it feel like?
Patients may report feeling soreness and a thumping sensation when the treatment head passes over dysfunctional tissues.  Patients report feeling very little discomfort when it actively travels over healthy tissue.  The level of discomfort depends on the area being treated, the settings on the device, and the acuity of the condition.  Minor post-treatment soreness around the involved area is not uncommon.

Can I do shockwave therapy concurrently with physical therapy?
Shockwave therapy is most effective when combined with a regular course of physical therapy to also address underlying mobility, flexibility and strength issues.  If you are on certain medications or have certain conditions, shockwave may not be right for you.  You and your PT will determine if this treatment is right for you.
